Waterford dance act King Kong Company play the Cork Opera House as part of the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival on Sunday, October 24. We asked band member Colin Hoye the BIG questions . . .
Tell us three things about yourself?
I play Trumpet and Keyboard for King Kong Company.
I hate Bananas, Bananas should be banned, they smell and taste terrible.
I love Banana Plants. I have quite a few currently growing in my garden however thankfully due to the Irish climate they won't fruit here.
How would you describe your music?
This can be quite difficult to answer. Essentially, it's electronic dance music but we can often throw different elements in such as Reggae/Punk/ Disco into the mix. Often, we have something there for most to grab onto.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I guess our main influences would come from the longstanding dance artists such as Leftfield and the Chemical Brothers and more recently the likes of Justice. All of us in the band have varied musical tastes so influence can come from almost anywhere really.
What are you most looking forward to post-lockdown?
Gigs, gigs and then more gigs, whether it's us on the stage or someone else. I've really missed the feeling and sense of community that comes with that. Really looking forward to getting to a few festivals next year too.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Chaise Longue by Wet Leg - catchy, clever, and fun.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Take my shoes off and throw them in the lake, And I'll be two steps on the water" - Kate Bush, Hounds of Love. Makes no sense at all - Love it. (Makes perfect sense of us - Ed).
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
I'd have to pick something really happy as I'd be very depressed if I wasn’t allowed to listen to anything else. Something like Bill Withers Lovely Day would do, I guess.
Where can people find your music/more information?
Spotify, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram.
