The Gaiety Theatre is taking a dive under the ocean to celebrate its 150 anniversary with The Little Mermaid panto.

The Dublin theatre, which is situated just off Grafton Street, first opened its doors on 27 November, 1871, with the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland as guest of honour and a double bill of Goldsmith's evergreen comedy She Stoops to Conquer followed by the tuneful burlesque La Belle Sauvage.

Over the past 150 years a number of famous faces have tread the Gaiety Theatre's boards including Maureen Potter, Niall Toibin, John B. Keane, Anna Manahan, Des Keogh and Rosaleen Linehan.

Their bronze handprints, along with Luciano Pavarotti's and Brian Friel's, are set into the pavement outside the front of the theatre.

The theatre is beginning its big birthday celebrations on November 28 with this year's panto, The Little Mermaid which promises to be an "extravaganza with singing, dancing and laugh out loud oceanic adventures". It will run until January 9.

In a statement the theatre said audiences can "expect plenty of twists, turns and hilarious high jinks as Ariel tries to escape the scheming evil witch Ursula who tries to take over the kingdom, steal her voice and stop true love!"

Tickets from €19.50 including booking fee on sale now from Ticketmaster. All original tickets purchased for The Little Mermaid 2020 dates remain valid for the new dates.
