Amy Schumer has said she had her uterus and appendix removed during surgery to treat endometriosis.

The 40-year-old comedian and actress updated her fans on the procedure in a video posted to Instagram from her hospital bed.

She said: "So it's the morning after my surgery for endometriosis and my uterus is out. The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis that he removed. He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it.

"There was a lot of blood in my uterus and I'm sore and I have some like, gas pains."

Endometriosis is a medical condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

In addition to the clip, Schumer shared a picture of her wearing a hospital gown and blue latex gloves.

Captioning the post, she wrote: "If you have really painful periods you may have #endometriosis."

Girls star Lena Dunham also opted to have a hysterectomy due to the years of chronic pain she suffered from endometriosis.
