Jessica Chastain has explained a viral red carpet moment that occurred between her and Oscar Isaac at the Venice Film Festival.

The actors, who were promoting their HBO miniseries Scenes from a Marriage, were being photographed on the red carpet when Isaac leaned in and appeared to try and kiss her arm.

A slow motion clip of the moment went viral, with fans speculating over their relationship.

When Chastain was asked about the internet's obsession with the video on the Today show, she joked: "Let me just say, though, this is a slow-motion video, and everybody is super sexy in slow motion."

The Hollywood star continued: "I think it was really funny because when you look at it in regular speed, I'm looking straight ahead and he looks over at me and he just kind of goes to give me a peck on my elbow, and at the same time, I'm going to give him a hug. So all of a sudden his face ends up in my armpit.

"He made a joke out of it, look he's smiling there!" she said as they watched the clip back. "All the photographers started laughing, and were like, 'What just happened?'"

She added of the reason she thinks it resonated with people: "We have all been locked in our houses for so long. When this video went viral, I was like, 'People just need to see people touch and hold each other.'"

Chastain and Issac have been friends since their Julliard days. "We went to college together, so we've been friends more than half of our lives and we know so much about each other," she explained.

She was quick to emphasise that they are both happily married to other people. Chastain wed Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo in 2017 while Issac also married his partner, screenwriter Elvira Lind, that year.
