Cork singer songwriter Martin Leahy has released his latest song, Brian. We asked him the BIG questions . . .
A tribute to his friend Brian Meade, who died in August 2004, the track features Leahy on vocals, drums, double bass, guitars, and pedal steel, Aisling Urwin on harmonies, with strings by Aine O'Gorman.
Tell us three things about yourself?
I’m a musician. I write songs. I can’t seem to make scrambled eggs properly.
How would you describe your music?
Dark, moody, hopeful folk.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I have lots and some of them are Squarepusher, Paul Simon, Maria Callas, Wally Page, Burial.
What are you most looking forward to post-lockdown?
I am most looking forward to playing gigs and going back to picking up all my normal infections!
What’s your favourite song right now?
My favourite song at the moment is a song called Dry by the great Canadian songwriter Ron Hynes.
Favourite lyric of all time?
My favourite lyric of all time is, "From faraway the city is a great big chandelier, But when you get near, The light begins to separate, and you see a different landscape yeah, a different landscape" from The City of Styrofoam Cups by the brilliant Jinx Lennon.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
Far From Me by John Prine.
