Behind the music - Idle Dream

Idle Dream
Idle Dream

Dublin duo Idle Dream have released their new single, The First Time. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Formed by Chris McGrath (vocals) as a bedroom project, he found himself uninspired and in need of adding a fresh face to the mix. Connor McCabe joined on guitar in January 2020, giving the project a renewed purpose and energy.

Tell us three things about yourself?

Hi, I'm Chris McGrath, the guitar player, and the primary songwriter in the band Idle Dream.

When I'm not obsessing over music, I like history and a good old fashioned general knowledge quiz. I'm not very rock 'n' roll in my spare time.

After spending the best part of half an hour thinking of the third thing, I'm going to go with being bad at describing myself.

How would you describe your music?

Melodic, energetic, and passionate.

Who are your musical inspirations?

So, so many but I'll try to be concise. The way I write, I tend to relate to solo artists like Prince, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, Elvis Costello, and Trent Reznor/NIN. Artists who create their own worlds and creatively stick to their guns, regardless. More recent artists who I feel are in a similar vein, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, and Billie Eilish.

What are you most looking forward to post-lockdown?

Gigs, most definitely gigs. Meeting up with friends that I haven't seen in way too long. I definitely want to travel the world a little more.

What's your favourite song right now?

I'll go with something current, White Dress by Lana Del Rey. I love the minimal vibe of it, with Lana's barely there falsetto, a great combo.

Favourite lyric of all time?

For me it's the opening lines of In My Life by The Beatles. Simple and poignant.

"There are place I'll remember, All my life though some have changed, Some forever, not for better, Some have gone and some remain".

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

Heyday by Mic Christopher, it's such a positive song in a real sort of way.
