The American actor Alex Cord, best known for his role as Michael Coldsmith Briggs III aka Archangel in the 1980s TV adventure series Airwolf, has died at the age of 88.

Cord's publicist told US entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter that the actor passed away at his home in Valley View, Texas on Monday.

Born Alexander Viespi, Jr in Long Island, New York, Cord's screen career as a character actor spanned almost 50 years.

He turned to acting after his rodeo riding career was cut short due to injury.

Among his many television credits were Naked City, Route 66, Mission: Impossible, Fantasy Island, Simon & Simon and Walker, Texas Ranger.

His film credits included remakes of John Wayne's Stagecoach and The Searchers - retitled Greyeagle - The Brotherhood with Kirk Douglas and Stiletto with Britt Ekland.

But it is for his role as intelligence boss Archangel opposite Jan-Michael Vincent and Ernest Borgnine in helicopter action series Airwolf that he will be best remembered by audiences.

Vincent passed away in 2019 at the age of 74; Borgnine passed away in 2012 at the age of 95.
