What's on? 10 top TV and streaming tips for Friday

Cruel Summer
Cruel Summer

Today's picks include bingey new US drama Cruel Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's dark dramedy Mr Corman, geezer comedy King Gary, and Australian murder-mystery The Dry . . .

Pick of the Day

Cruel Summer, Amazon Prime Video

This looks like being a major binge-worthy distraction. Just don't expect it to be the new Search Party though . . .

The 10-part US drama takes place over the course of three summers in the 1990s when a beautiful and popular teen goes missing.

So far, so familiar. But in tandem, a seemingly unrelated girl transforms from a sweet and awkward outlier to the most popular girl in town, eventually becoming the most despised person in America.

Somewhat reminiscent of the structure of the Ruth Wilson and Joshua Jackson-starring The Affair, each episode is told from alternating points of view.

Don’t Miss

King Gary, 9.30pm, BBC One

As Tom Davis’ comedy continues, Gary takes Teddy to the driving range to teach him some golf basics.

To Gary's surprise and delight, Teddy would appear to be a natural - ball after ball is struck sweetly and soars into the distance.

This is exciting news for Gary and his father, who soon have Teddy's golfing career and path to superstardom all mapped out.

Meanwhile new neighbour Aaron starts to look like bad news for the Crescent.

The Lateish Show With Mo Gilligan, 10.00pm, Channel 4

This week Mo Gilligan (below) chews the fat with singer Gabrielle, rapper Big Zuu, boxer Tyson Fury and comedy-actress Roisin Conaty, along with a `very special' surprise guest.

Plus, there’s the usual activities, including sketches featuring Mo's trademark characters, more iconic Nursery Grimes, musical performances, and studio games where the audience could win some incredible prizes.

New to Stream

Mr Corman, Apple TV+

Written, directed, produced by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this dark dramedy follows the days and nights of Josh Corman, an artist at heart but not by trade.

Things haven’t been going his way lately - his lifelong dream of a career in music didn't pan out and he finds himself teaching fifth grade at a school in the San Fernando Valley.

Meanwhile, his ex-fiancé Megan has moved out and his high school buddy has moved in.

Aware that he still has a lot to be thankful for, Josh struggles nevertheless through universal feelings of anxiety, loneliness and self-doubt.

Hit & Run, Netflix

The Swarm, Netflix

The Dry, Sky Cinema & NOW TV

Here’s some Australian drama as Eric Bana stars in this adaptation of Jane Harper’s 2016 international bestseller.

Federal Agent Aaron Falk returns to his drought-stricken hometown after an absence of over twenty years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke, who allegedly killed his wife and child before taking his own life.

When Falk reluctantly agrees to stay and investigate the crime, he opens up an old wound - the death of 17- year-old Ellie Deacon.

Falk begins to suspect these two crimes, separated by decades, are connected.

As he struggles to prove not only Luke's innocence but also his own, Falk finds himself pitted against the prejudice towards him and pent-up rage of a terrified community.
