Dublin hip-hop/R&B producer Carsten2X has released his new debut single, Beaucoup. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about the new song, which was co-produced by Chuks Chiejine (Brockhampton, Burna Boy) and mixed by Richard Furch (Tobi Lou, Frank Ocean, BJ the Chicago Kid), he says, "The lyrics on Beaucoup are kind of my work around of talking about sold out shows and plaques without having them.

"Basically, a song about all the things I'm trying to get and accomplish. With a few tongue in cheek lines, as I try to have fun with it when I’m making songs. The hook is saying that I want these things and it’s my right to try everything to get them."

Born in Dubai, Carsten lived in Kazakhstan until he was two, and was then raised in Shankill, Dublin.

The video for Beaucoup, which is out on August 9, was directed by Robert Bass and follows Carsten2X as he switches between his dreams and real life.

Carsten 2X: "I feel as though my music is unique in itself and I often find myself describing it as just CARSTEN2X."

"The lyrics also played a big part in the video storyline. While I’m in the suit, it’s meant to represent my dreams: performing on stage and the girl etc. And then when I’m in my normal clothes: in the kitchen, on my bike, with my friends, represents my reality at the minute."

Tell us three things about yourself?

I’m a half danish/half Irish 22-year-old from Shankill, Dublin.

I’ve learned everything I know about music through the internet and, trial and error.

I work on all elements of my music: production, writing, performing.

How would you describe your music?

I think my music is a mixture of several genres but the most prevalent being hip hop and R&B. From structure to sound selection, I draw elements from both - hip hop drums with R&B melodies. But in the same breath, I feel as though my music is unique in itself and I often find myself describing it as just CARSTEN2X.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Musically, I think Frank Ocean was the artist who made me fall in love with music, but I’m inspired by all kinds of artists like Dominic Fike, Smino, Lil Peep, Xxxtentacion. I really get inspired by artists who have their own unique sound, like said artists.

What are you most looking forward to post-lockdown?

Post-lockdown I’m planning to continue releasing and pushing my music, with shows, collaborations, projects. Just really diving into my music career.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Kiss U Right Now - Duckwrth.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"She like the strings on my guitar neck, and my blonde hair " Why - Dominic Fike. I don’t know why but that’s the first lyric that pops into my mind.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

If I had to listen to one song for the rest of my life it would have to be Nights - Frank Ocean. It’s a masterpiece.
