Plans for a reboot/prequel to action franchise Die Hard seem to be up in the air after a producer attached to the project dashed hopes that it would go ahead.
Entertainment news site Polygon has reported that work on a possible sixth Die Hard instalment has halted.
Previous rumours had suggested that a younger version of maverick cop John McClane, who was played by Bruce Willis in five Die Hard movies, would be back for a new adventure set in 1970s New York.
However, speaking during a press interview to promote new G.I. Joe movie Snake Eyes, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said, "Yeah, no, It's not happening."
He added, "But what was really interesting was we actually came up with an idea to do it. It was a project that wasn’t Die Hard that then, eventually, shifted over to Die Hard."
It’s through that shelved plans for a reboot of the movie is down to Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox and, along with it, the Die Hard title.
"I don't know what their plans are," said di Bonaventura of the studio's future designs on the franchise.
Willis first starred as McClane in 1988’s much-loved Die Hard and reprised the role in 1990, 1995, 2007 and 2013.
However, the most recent instalment in the franchise, 2013’s A Good Day to Die Hard, which was directed by Dundalk-born director John Moore, was panned by critics and fans.
"What was interesting about our idea was it allowed you the ability to meet the young John McClane and use Bruce," di Bonaventura said.
"It was really interesting in that way. So, you sort of got to see both versions of him. A bit [like The Godfather: Part II]."
