Cork art-punk trio Pretty Happy have released their new EP, Sluggers Bridge and its lead single, Sudocream. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
It follows previous singles Salami and Sea Sea Sea and speaking about the new EP, the band, who draw on the rebellious tradition of Cork post-punk, say, "With Sluggers Bridge we have attempted to capture our live theatre-influenced, art-punk sound.
"We wanted to make this EP as interdisciplinary as possible, incorporating elements of spoken word and taking as much inspiration from the Irish stage as we do the Irish music scene. This EP is uniquely Cork, influenced greatly by the people and humour of the city."
Tell us three things about yourselves?
Arann recently stopped drinking IPA because of his stomach.
Abbey beat the Tekken arcade game in Leisureplex when she was eight years old.
Andy lives for non-uniform days.
How would you describe your music?
We use the term Art Punk, and we think that fits quite well. It's a noisy post punk style that uses very theatrical and erratic vocals. We try to make our songs as fun as possible.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Pixies, Nun Attax, Sonic Youth, David Byrne.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Arann - Beautiful Blue Sky - Ought. This song is so beautiful and brash at the same time. Really hypnotises you into a groovy lull.
Abbey - Knocknaheeny Shuffle - Five Go Down to the Sea? A beautifully weird chaotic walloper of a song.
Andy - All the Same - Quasi. This is a great song when you’re kind of lost in everything.
Favourite lyric all time?
Arann - Salonika - Traditional. "They take's us out to Blarney, and they lay's us on the grass, They puts us in the family way and they leaves us on our arse"
Abbey - I Don’t Really Care For You - CMAT. "Oh, the Marian Keyes of it all!"
Andy - Velouria - Pixies. "And how does lemur skin, Reflect the sea?"
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
Arann - This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody). Talking Heads have some of the most entrancing songs ever written and this one takes the cake.
Abbey - Ora - Lisa Hannigan. This is my desert island Song. It always makes me think of boats. It’d be nice to think of boats stranded on an island.
Andy - Velouria - Pixies. This song melts my heart for no reason.
