Hollywood star and Dalkey regular Matt Damon has said he has no interest in courting fame, insisting "I just love the work".

The actor attended the world premiere of out-of-competition Cannes Film Festival entry Stillwater on Thursday alongside his co-star, French actress Camille Cottin.

Speaking to France TV news he said of the trappings of fame: "I never was interested in that whole other side of celebrity, none of that interests me.

"I just love the work, I really love the work and I feel really lucky that I'm able to do the movies that I want to do, and it kind of ends there."

The 50-year-old American actor added: "There are other people who enjoy that, you know they go out and they get the paparazzi chasing them and clearly some people enjoy that and that's fine.

"I just want the work."

Damon was full of praise for his Stillwater co-star Cottin, who is well known for playing Andréa Martel in the hit Netflix French comedy series Call My Agent.

"I just work with the best people that will work with me. When I work with people like this, it's very easy", he said of Cottin.

"I've always said about acting, there are actors who are so good that they're good enough for both of you in a scene and that's how I felt in this, where all I needed to do was look at her and she brought me all of the places I needed to go."

Damon became something of a national hero in Ireland last year when he was pictured with a SuperValu bag while going for a lockdown dip in Dalkey.

The actor and his family were forced to stay in the Dublin seaside village when lockdown was put in place in March, 2020 while he was in Ireland shooting Ridley Scott's new movie The Last Duel.

He said he was "so surprised" after the the incident elevated him to the status of a proud son of Eire and has vowed to return to Ireland after the pandemic.

"I was so surprised by all of it. Listen, if any of us Hollywood types knew that, you'd see everybody turning up with those Supervalu bags wandering around trying to get their picture taken", he previously joked to Dalkey Book Festival host David McWilliams,

Stillwater is released in cinemas on August 6.
