The Kate Winslet-led limited series Mare of Easttown has concluded to widespread acclaim, and the Hollywood star has now said she would be interested in filming another season.

The hit HBO thriller, in which Winslet played a gruff, grieving detective investigating a murder in a small Pennsylvania town, proved a huge hit among viewers, with the English actress in particular being singled out for praise for her convincing and understated performance.

Winslet has revealed that she misses playing Mare, and would leap at the chance to portray her again.

When asked about the prospect of a second season, she told TVLine: "I would absolutely love to play Mare again.

"I miss her. I really do. It's the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role…

"There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her."

Meanwhile, Brad Ingelsby, the writer-creator behind the show, has said he does not know if there will be a second run, as he has yet to come up with a story that would do justice to the character - and the audience.

He told entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter that his breakout show was "written as a limited [series], and it ends - there's no more mystery to be solved".

"Kate and I, if we could crack a story that we were really proud of and felt like it was a deserving second chapter in Mare's journey, then maybe," explained Ingelsby, who is among the executive producers on the HBO series with Winslet.

"I haven't cracked that yet; I don't know what that is, honestly. But if there was a world in which we were convinced, this is a continuation of the story that honours the first chapter and does things an audience will appreciate, then maybe. But as of right now, I have no idea what that could be."
