Meath-based artist and producer Lisa Murray had released her debut single, The Kind of Girl. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
The track was written during Lisa's time studying at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, from which she holds a master’s degree in Music Production, Technology and Innovation.
"When it comes to song writing, I often wake up in the morning with a fully fleshed out song idea in my head," she says. "This was one of those songs that appeared in my psyche one day, and once I started to sing through and perform it, the rest of the song wrote itself. You can’t force that creative process; you have to let it find you."
Tell us three things about yourself?
I am an artist, music producer, audio engineer and multi-faceted creator. I’m passionate about female empowerment, and I work with shesaid.so Dublin and She Knows Tech towards bridging the gender gap in the music industry. And last but not least, I’m a Gaeilgeoir!
How would you describe your music?
My music fuses a unique production style with honest and narrative storytelling to create a soundtrack of modern life and love. I like to combine tongue-in-cheek wit with a raw expression of emotion in my song writing process, detailing the charming tragedy of modern womanhood. As a producer, I typically fuse 80s nostalgia with cutting edge vocal production that allows listeners to dive deep into my nostalgic pop world. I like to think of my music as an eclectic melting pot of my favourite song writing and production styles, with hints of my personality shining through at every step of the creation process.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I’ve always been inspired by the old school sounds and honesty of Fleetwood Mac. From a storytelling perspective I look to Taylor Swift for inspiration, her ability to romanticise mundane and familiar subject matter is something I strive towards in my writing. In terms of production, I’m a huge fan of Max Martin and Charlie Puth but I also love the way artists like Imogen Heap and Björk push the boundaries of conventional creativity.
How are you occupying yourself during the coronavirus restrictions?
When the coronavirus restrictions hit, I was in the middle of studying for my master’s degree in Music Production, Technology and Innovation at Berklee College of Music. When the pandemic struck, campus was shut down and all classes were moved online. So, I packed my bags and headed back to the countryside in Co. Meath to finish my studies. I ended up investing in my own home studio equipment and building a lovely creative space where I now record, produce, and mix all of my own music. A huge milestone for me during the coronavirus restrictions is launching my artist project, starting with this debut single The Kind of Girl, which is the first in a string of singles that I will be putting out this summer!
What’s your favourite song right now?
My favourite song right now is Love You For A Long Time by Maggie Rogers, it’s the perfect soundtrack for a summertime drive.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Time casts a spell on you, but you won’t forget me/I know I could have loved you, but you would not let me/I’ll follow you down ’til the sound of my voice will haunt you/You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you." - Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, an absolute masterpiece.
