Sara Ramirez has been cast in the Sex and the City reboot as the franchise's first non-binary character.

The 10-episode HBO Max revival, titled And Just Like That, follows Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) as they navigate friendship in their 50s. Kim Cattrall and her character Samantha Jones will be notably absent from the new show.

Grey's Anatomy and Madam Secretary star Ramirez will play the role of Che Diaz, a non-binary stand-up comedian who hosts a podcast on which Carrie is regularly featured. Che is described as "a big presence with a big heart" with an "outrageous sense of humour and progressive, human overview of gender roles."

Executive producer Michael Patrick King said in a statement: "Everyone at And Just Like That… is beyond thrilled that a dynamically talented actor such as Sara Ramírez has joined the Sex and the City family.

"Sara is a one-of-a-kind talent, equally at home with comedy and drama - and we feel excited and inspired to create this new character for the show."

Ramirez hinted at the exciting new role on Instagram by posting a picture of the script for And Just Like That with the Empire State Building in the background.

The Mexican-American star, who is non-binary, rose to prominence in the role of Dr. Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy. They later played the non-binary, bisexual role of Kat Sandoval in the CBS drama Madam Secretary.

The only other confirmed cast members for the SATC revival are returning stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

Original star Kim Cattrall's absence in the revived Sex and the City series will be part of the show's overall storyline.
