Netflix has announced that it is making a Bridgerton prequel series about the hit show's Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuvel.

Announcing the news, the streaming giant tweeted: "All Hail The Queen!

"Thrilled to announce we're expanding the Bridgerton universe with a limited series that will tell Queen Charlotte's origin story - the series will also feature young Violet Bridgerton and young Lady Danbury."

The series will be written by Bridgerton boss Shonda Rhimes, who will also be among the executive producers.

"As we continue to expand the world of Bridgerton, we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland [production company] fold to the Bridgerton-verse," said Grey's Anatomy creator Rhimes.

Season two of Bridgerton is currently in production.
