Grimes has revealed that she suffered a panic attack after making a cameo on Saturday Night Live alongside her boyfriend Elon Musk, who was hosting the popular US comedy sketch show.

The 33-year-old Canadian musician made a guest appearance on the NBC late-night show on May 8 as the character Princess Peach during a courtroom spoof of the Super Mario video games.

Grimes shared photographs to her Instagram page showing her backstage in costume with the musical guest Miley Cyrus and she revealed she was taken to hospital after suffering a panic attack.

She wrote: "Forgot to post these cuz I somehow caused myself to have a panic attack and went to the hospital yesterday which tbh (to be honest) was quite scary and I suppose it's a good time to start therapy."

The singer, whose real name is Claire Boucher, continued: "But nonetheless – wowwwww @mileycyrus is good live and so chill!

"So grateful to the SNL team for being so kind and letting me sneak in as princess peach snd (sic) so proud of my beautiful E (which I know will upset the grimes fans so I apologise in advance) but he killed it."

Grimes's billionaire partner Elon Musk, boss of electric car manufacturer Tesla and aerospace company SpaceX, revealed he has Asperger's syndrome while hosting the programme.

Tesla billionaire Elon Musk hosted Saturday Night Live on May 8

"I don't always have a lot of intonation or variation in how I speak... which I'm told makes for great comedy," he said in his opening monologue. "I'm actually making history tonight as the first person with Asperger's to host SNL."

The 49-year-old tech entrepreneur also joked about his eccentric and sometimes controversial social media presence.

"Look, I know I sometimes say or post strange things, but that's just how my brain works," he said.

"To anyone who's been offended, I just want to say I reinvented electric cars, and I'm sending people to Mars in a rocket ship. Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?"

Musk and Grimes welcomed their first child, a son, last year and named him X AE A-Xii.

Musk quipped of the unusual name choice: "It's pronounced cat running across keyboard."

The couple made their debut as a couple at the 2018 Met Gala.
