Tonight's top TV includes Reeling in the Years hitting 2012, a sensational Line of Duty, Sharon Shannon visiting former homes - and later on, The Oscars begin when most sensible folk are fast asleep . . .

Pick of the Day

Reeling in the Years, 8.30pm, RTÉ One

This week’s edition features the hits and headlines of 2012, when Katie Taylor won boxing gold for Ireland at the London Olympics and Scouse singer Nathan Carter had a breakthrough hit with Wagon Wheel.

Elsewhere, in the USA, Barack Obama (below) won a second term as President. It was also the year when the Costa Concordia cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Italy.

Skydiver Felix Baumgartner completed a world record freefall parachute jump from a height of 38.9km above the Earth, and NASA scientists celebrated the success of the ‘Curiosity Rover’ mission to Mars.

Back in Ireland, the death of Savita Halappanavar in University Hospital Galway became an immediate focus for demands to change the country’s strict abortion laws, written into the Constitution since 1983.

Television in Ireland went fully digital this year as the old analogue system was switched off - and 2012 also saw the launch in Ireland of the streaming service Netflix.

Don’t Miss

Line of Duty, 9.00pm, BBC One

It’s the penultimate season six episode of Jed Mercurio’s compelling crime drama about ‘bent coppers’, starring Adrian Dunbar (above, left) as Ted Hastings, the head of an anti-corruption cop unit.

So, what’s going to be the result of last week’s cliffhanger? Have to say I’m not looking forward to this as I fear for the fate of Kate.

As AC-12 struggle to deal with the repercussions of tragic events, Hastings makes one final bid to uncover institutionalised corruption before his time runs out.

Keys to My Life, 7.30pm, RTÉ One

Animal Emergency, 8.00pm, Virgin Media One

Great concept for a TV show. Nothing pulls the heartstrings more than a sick pet.

This week, Chinook, a fluffy Samoyed dog is brought to the Vet Hospital in UCD to see if the tumour on his liver is operable.

Meanwhile, Mirabella the cat arrives for a radical radium treatment that only the Vet Hospital can provide in a last ditch effort to treat her thyroid issues, while Rua's owner is concerned he may have epilepsy, while a bull comes to the hospital for a delicate operation.

Call the Midwife, 8.00pm, BBC One

You can also catch regular updates live overnight here on RTÉ Entertainment, while there’s a highlights show tomorrow night on RTÉ2.
