Pick of the Day
Dark Lies the Island, 9.40pm, RTÉ One
Here’s a dark dramedy scratching beneath the surface of Irish life, created by Kevin Barry and directed by Ian Fitzgibbon, that doesn’t quite fit a date night role, but is well worth a watch.
Charlie Murphy stars as Sara, who has married into the feuding and utterly dysfunctional Mannion family.
Her husband Daddy Mannion (Pat Shortt) is 20 years her senior and yields power in a small town, but she’s into his estranged son, criminal recluse Doggy Mannion (Peter Coonan), and is also involved with his younger son, failed chicken farmer Martin (Moe Dunford).
Tommy Tiernan turns up, which is normally not unusual on a Saturday night on RTÉ One. But this time’s different. Very different.
