The death has been announced of the composer and lyricist Jim Steinman, whose credits include Meat Loaf's landmark album Bat Out of Hell, his worldwide hit I'd Do Anything for Love, and Bonnie Tyler's number one power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart. He was 73.

The Connecticut State Medical Examiner confirmed Steinman's passing to entertainment trade publication Variety. It was later reported that Steinman died from kidney failure and had been ill for some time.

Steinman composed all the songs on Meat Loaf's debut album Bat Out of Hell. The 1977 album went on to sell more than 50 million copies around the world.

He worked again with the singer on 1981 follow-up Dead Ringer and later as composer/producer on 1993's Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, from which I'd Do Anything for Love was taken. Steinman's most recent work with Meat Loaf was as composer of his 2016 album, Braver Than We Are.

The New Yorker wrote and produced Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart, one of the biggest-selling singles of 1983. He co-wrote Tyler's 1984 hit Holding Out for a Hero and produced the track. Another power ballad written by Steinman was It's All Coming Back to Me Now, made famous by Celine Dion in a version with Steinman as producer.

Steinman also wrote the lyrics for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Whistle Down the Wind and was behind Bat Out of Hell The Musical, which opened in 2017 and became a box office hit.

As a producer, Steinman worked on The Sisters of Mercy's This Corrosion and Dominion/Mother Russia from their 1987 album Floodland. He also co-wrote and co-produced More from The Sisters of Mercy's 1990 album Vision Thing.

His other songwriting credits included Air Supply's Making Love Out of Nothing at All and Barbra Streisand's Left in the Dark. Among the other acts Steinman produced were Take That (Never Forget) and Boyzone (No Matter What).
