Joseph Siravo, who played Tony Soprano's father Johnny in The Sopranos, has died. Siravo, who was 66, had been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Siravo's agent told entertainment trade publication Variety that the Washington DC-born actor had fought a "long, courageous" battle with cancer.

Siravo made his screen debut in the 1993 film Carlito's Way. He also appeared in the series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, The Blacklist, Made in Jersey and Law & Order, among others.

He starred in the Broadway productions of Oslo and The Light in the Piazza and appeared in over 2,000 performances on the US tour of the hit musical Jersey Boys. Siravo had many Off-Broadway and regional theatre roles among his stage credits. He also taught on a number of acting courses in New York.

Paying tribute, Sopranos star Michael Imperioli wrote: "Joe was an excellent actor and a wonderful guy and he will be missed dearly. His performance [as] Johnny Boy Soprano was spot on and he also made a perfect John Gotti in Nick Sandow's The Wannabe. In my opinion, he was the best of all the actors who've played the Teflon Don."
