Tonight's TV tips include The Tommy Tiernan Show (of course!), Freddie Mercury: A Life in Ten Pictures, the final Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and some cracking movies . . .

Pick of the Day

The Tommy Tiernan Show, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

Usually, when someone doesn’t have a clue it leads to bad situations and unhappy endings. Here, the opposite is true.

Once again, Tommy Tiernan hosts the greatest improvised chat show on the planet, where neither the presenter nor the viewers are told the identity of the guests in advance.

With everyone in the dark about who he will be interviewing until they walk out to greet him, anything can happen – and it’s often even more fascinating if Tommy doesn't have a clue who they are.

Don’t Miss

Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, 7.00pm, Virgin Media One

In the final show of this run, comedian Mo Gilligan is in the guest announcer booth, while athlete Mo Farah is Ant and Dec's latest victim in I'm a Celebrity Get Out of Me Ear.

Plus, Stephen Mulhern is on hand for the climax of Ant v Dec: Go for Gold, comedy serial Double Trouble draws to an epic conclusion and the programme goes out with a bang thanks to a spectacular End of the Show Show.

Ben-Hur, 1.40pm, RTÉ One

There's a couple of Agatha Christie adaptations on BBC Two this afternoon (Death on the Nile at 1.50pm, followed by Evil Under the Sun at 4.05pm), but this is a bum-numbing epic that will easily fill in the afternoon if the weather's unpleasant or you fancy nothing more demanding than the sofa.

Charlton Heston stars as a Jewish prince in first-century Jerusalem is reunited with an old Roman friend, who is now the governor of Judea.

But their differing political views over local dissent leads to a bitter quarrel, and the governor uses the pretext of an accident to sell him into slavery and imprison his mother and sister.

Years later, the prince returns, determined to seek revenge and find his missing family.
