Colin Farrell has joined Ron Howard's new movie Thirteen Lives, which tells the true-story of the extraordinary international rescue mission of twelve young boys and their football coach from a flooded cave in Thailand in 2018.

The 44-year-old Dublin actor will star in the film alongside A-listers Viggo Mortensen and Joel Edgerton to tell the story of the heroic rescuers who risked their lives mounting the Than Luang cave.

According to Deadline, Farrell will play veteran cave diver John Volanthen, who specialises in underwater rescues and was honored with a George Medal, the second-highest civilian award for bravery.

Edgerton will play Dr. Richard Harris, an anesthetist and cave diver with over 30 years of experience, who was named Australian of the Year in 2019 following the rescue, while Mortensen will play Richard Stanton, a cave rescue specialist who was also honored with the George Medal.

The mission made headlines across the globe as all twelve boys, as well as their coach, were saved.

Weir Sukollawat, Thiraphat Sajakul, Sahajak Boonthanakit, Vithaya Pansringarm, Teeradon 'James' Supapunpinyo, Nophand Boonyai, Tom Bateman, Paul Gleeson and Lewis Fitz-Gerald will also appear in the movie.

Production on the project, which be will penned by Gladiator scribe William Nicholson, is set to begin this month with filming taking place in both Thailand and Australia.
