Supertonic Sound Club
Supertonic Sound Club

Irish funk-soul revue Supertonic Sound Club have released their new double A-side single. We asked the band's organ player Jim Pipe the BIG questions . . .

The double A-side features the up-tempo modern soul tune Let's Get Arrested, and The Hump, a 60s/70s inspired Hammond organ/brass instrumental.

Tell us three things about yourself?

I'm the organ player with Supertonic Sound Club, which is an apt name for a Pipe.

I was born in London and spent my childhood by the sea/on a boat - but no, not a fan of sea shanties.

My favourite venue is the Rivoli Ballroom in South London, home to the fabulous Club Montepulciano in the 90s.

How would you describe your music?

Yvonne Baker and Otis Redding in a sing off, with Ken Boothe holding the coats and Steve Marriott egging them on - so a mix of soul, funk, and authentic reggae, with a splash of Mark Ronson.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Booker T & The MGs, The Small Faces, Prince Buster, Professor Longhair, Northern Soul, Deep Funk, 60s/70s film soundtracks . . .

How are you occupying yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

We finished off recording tracks for our debut album just before lockdown and we've been hard at work producing them.  It has also been great to have the time to rework some of our older material. fingers crossed we'll have the album out in the Autumn. My other gig is animation so I'm knee deep in Unreal Engine right now.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Wildfires by Sault.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"When my soul was in the lost and found, You came along to claim it" - Carole King.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

For Once In My Life - Stevie Wonder.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Bandcamp and Facebook.
