Contemporary harpist Brídín has released her new EP, Ocean of Stars. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
The West Co. Sligo native carries on the traditions of skills and talents passed down through her family and is the fourth generation to play Irish music and plays harp, flute, piano, and dance sean nós.
By day, Brídín works as a full-time funeral director and embalmer, taking after her father David McGowan.
Speaking about the release of her new EP, she says, "I'm so excited to have this EP out, as I’ve been working on it for a while now getting it right.
"I’ve met so many incredible musicians along the way that I’m lucky to have worked with on my music. I couldn’t be more pleased with the result! From hearing them in my head as an idea, to watching them grow was magic and so exciting.
"I hope Ocean of Stars EP can bring some happiness and calm to people in such a challenging time."
Tell us three things about yourself?
I’m a multi-instrumentalist, singer, dancer, and composer from county Sligo.
I studied music in UCC - degree in Music and Irish and Masters in Music Performance.
I’m a funeral director/embalmer.
How would you describe your music?
I create my music by using my loop and effect pedals with my harp and vocals to create this other worldly feel. My music is chilled out, relaxing and feel good.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Harpist Laoise Kelly has always inspired me with her natural style of playing and creativity in her arrangements.
How are you occupying yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?
I’m a funeral director and embalmer (as seen on The Funeral Director on RTÉ), so I’ve been working this whole time, which I count myself lucky for. I’m finding it easier to dedicate time to the studio with nothing happening outside of work though.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Anseo by the legend Denise Chaila.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
That’s a really hard question, but it would have to be my favourite banger, Lay all Your Love on Me - ABBA
Where can people find your music/more information?
You can find me on all streaming and social media platforms at @bridinmusic or check out my website www.bridinmusic.ie
I’m also on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Spotify.
