Independent musician, songwriter, singer, and producer Elaine Mai has released No Forever, the first single to be taken from debut album, due for release later this year. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Originally from Mayo, now based in Dublin, she has been performing since 2011 when she began her career as an acoustic act using just a loop pedal and a guitar, and has since honed her skills and evolved her sound by moving into production and electronic music.

The video for No Forever was directed by renowned music photographer Ruth Medjber and it marks her directorial debut.

Tell us three things about yourself?

I'm an only child. When I was a kid, I actually thought the expression was 'lonely child’, so for a long time that’s what I said when I was asked.

I’ve been married for two years. I first met my wife Roisín in college in Galway and we got married in Donegal in 2018.

I have a cat called Juno who’s very independent and extremely moody, but very cute.

How would you describe your music

Emotional dance music – I try to create cathartic music that people can connect with.

Who are your musical inspirations?

There are so many, but I’ll mention Alanis Morissette, Robyn, Sia, Björk and Cyril Hahn.

How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

I started indoor rowing, which has been a great way to exercise and release pent-up energy. I’ve also been writing new music and focusing on getting my album done - easier said than done! A few months ago, I started listening to sleep stories on the Calm app to help me relax and empty my mind. They’re weirdly effective. And of course, I’ve drank plenty of red wine and watched lots of things! The Wilds, Call my Agent, and It’s a Sin to name a few.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Bicep - Apricots. I cannot stop listening to it.

Favourite lyric of all time?

‘You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan and the next five years trying to be with your friends again’ - LCD Soundsystem - All my Friends.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

Ah now, that’s very hard as it changes with the day! But today I’d choose Steve Monite – Only You.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Right here.
