Who could win what and why?

The late Chadwick Boseman is tipped to win Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, with many critics putting their bets on Carey Mulligan to snag the coveted Actress in a Motion Picture Drama award for her turn in Promising Young Woman.

Historical drama The Crown is in with a good chance of walking away with the Television Series Drama, with its leading lady Emma Corrin eyeing up the Best Actress, Television Series Drama accolade.

It looks like Sacha Baron Cohen could win the Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category, with his breakout co-star Maria Bakalova virtually taking home the Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy gong.

It's tough competition between Kaley Cuoco for The Flight Attendant and Catherine O'Hara's Schitt’s Creek in the Actress, Television category section. It's anyone's game. Either way, the much-loved Schitt's Creek is tipped to win the Television Series Comedy.

Jason Sudeikis is likely to win a prize for his stellar role in Ted Lasso and is considered a shoo-in to perform well in the Actor, Television Series Comedy.

Is there much Irish interest at this year's awards?

Brendan Gleeson is among the nominees in the TV categories for his portrayal of former US President Donald Trump in The Comey Rule, and Irish animated film Wolfwalkers is also shortlisted.

Gleeson's nomination as Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is his fourth Golden Globe nomination, having previously been shortlisted for The GuardInto the Storm and In Bruges.

Normal People and its star Daisy Edgar-Jones are among the nominees in the miniseries categories - but there was no nod for the drama's breakout Irish star, Paul Mescal.

Who will be honoured at the ceremony?

Jane Fonda will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes award ceremony.

Fonda, a two-time Academy Award winner, will join last year's winner, Tom Hanks as well as Oprah Winfrey, Jodie Foster, Denzel Washington and Robin Williams as a recipient of the award.

"Her undeniable talent has gained her the highest level of recognition," said the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) - the ceremony's organiser.
