Hal Holbrook, the veteran American actor best known for his role as Watergate source 'Deep Throat' in the Oscar-winning film All the President's Men, and his portrayals of US President Abraham Lincoln and author Mark Twain in numerous productions, has died at the age of 95.

Holbrook's personal assistant, Joyce Cohen, told The New York Times that the actor passed away on 23 January in Beverly Hills, California.

A five-time Emmy winner, Ohio-born Harold Rowe Holbrook's career spanned over 60 years and saw him portray Lincoln in the miniseries of the same name - one of his Emmy wins - and also in the 1980s TV hits North & South and North & South: Book II

Holbrook's performances as Twain stretched back to the 1950s and included Tony and Emmy wins for Mark Twin Tonight! on stage and screen.  

At 82, he became the oldest man in Academy Awards history to receive an acting Oscar nomination for his performance opposite Emile Hirsch in the Sean Penn-directed true story Into the Wild. It was Holbrook's sole Oscar nomination.

A new Oscar record was subsequently set by Christopher Plummer, who was 88 when nominated for his performance in Ridley Scott's 2017 film All the Money in the World.      

As Watergate source 'Deep Throat' - revealed decades later to be the late FBI Associate Director Mark Felt - Holbrook delivered an iconic performance in Alan J Pakula's All the President's Men opposite Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, respectively. 

Other key films in Holbrook's career included Wild in the Streets, Magnum Force, Capricorn One, Wall Street, The Star ChamberThe Firm and Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, in which he portrayed presidential adviser Preston Blair.  

On television, Holbrook starred in the series Evening Shade and Designing Women and had a recurring role in Sons of Anarchy. Among his many guest appearances were roles in Grey's Anatomy, ER, The Sopranos and The West Wing
