The Art Crimes Band have released their new single, In The Dark Of The Evening. We asked the band's lead guitarist Stephen Kirby the BIG questions . . .
Recorded during 2020, the song attempts to channel the late night soundscapes of the early 1980s LA studio "golden era" pioneered by the likes of Quincy Jones, Toto and Steely Dan, with lyrics offering a message of hope, love and friendship.
"This is a pivotal moment for us as we turn our backs on the typical bar gigging scene of eight years and we will now focus solely on developing our career as an original outfit," says drummer Niall Dennehy.
Tell us three things about yourself?
I am currently co-writing our upcoming album with my Art Crimes family.
I live in a little cottage in the countryside with my partner (Rosa), my cat (Gavin) and two miniature horses (both called Matthew).
I started playing guitar and growing my hair the day after my brother showed me Nevermind by Nirvana.
How would you describe your music?
Diverse is probably the most accurate word. We all come from very different places musically and are very open in the writing process. So, the end product shows this. Oh, and groovy as hell.
Who are your musical inspirations?
This is always such a tough question as there’s so many avenues you can go down (writer, new/old, style icon). I’ll say Keith Richards, a giant in every way, and David Byrne. Also, my good friend Tiz McNamara for being the hardest working musician I know.
How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?
Country life always keeps me busy which I’m so thankful for. I’ve been doing a lot of writing also, luckily enough. Music is so soothing in times like these, writing or listening. The online shows have been amazing too. Acts like the Mary Wallopers and CMAT are the true patron saints of the lockdowns.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I have been obsessed with all things Phoebe Bridgers for the last year or so, she is amazing. Such an amazing writer. So, Garden Song by Phoebe Bridgers.
Favourite lyric of all time?
The toughest question of all. I would likely change this answer daily, depending on my mood so I’ll go with this one. It’s from Keep Me In Your Heart by Warren Zevon. 'Shadows are fallin’ and I’m runnin’ out of breath, keep me in your heart for a while. If I leave you it doesn’t mean I love you any less, keep me in your heart for a while’.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
I was going to be crafty and pick something really long to get my money's worth. But I’ll go with Raglan Road by The Dubliners. Any time I listen to it I find or feel something different. My dad sings it after a few too so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
