Behind the music - Strawman & The Jackdaws

Strawman & The Jackdaws

Dublin-based fourpiece Strawman & The Jackdaws have released their debut EP, F∇X. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

The band, featuring singer-songwriter Riccardo Ranzani, drummer Michael Reolon, guitarist Jacopo Stofler and keyboardist and saxophonist Rory Fleming, say the EP "explores the meanings of the concept and the experience of traveling, driven from the belief that no matter the effort it takes, there will always be something to rely on and have faith in, a symbolic light emerging from shadows".

Tell us three things about yourself?

We break too many drumsticks, we break too many guitar strings, and we break too many glasses.

How would you describe your music?

It's hard to explain, because we all come from different music backgrounds and have diverse musical tastes. Our music spaces over-energetic, upbeat, folkie lines, engaging indie-pop melodies, and distorted riffs; all of this could probably be identified as indie-folk, but we don’t like to be identified in a specific genre. Our priority is to immerse the listeners in a bubble that can make them hope there is always something positive outside individual problems of everyday life.

How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

Since we all come from different places, we tried to spend time with our families, keep our spirit up and look after our mental health. We remained in touch with each other to create videos and write new music. We tried to make the best from this worrying time playing some tunes and chatting in live streams on Instagram.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Dissolve Me by alt-J is a song we have on repeat in our playlists at the moment.

Favourite lyric of all time?

As we love travelling all together and doing what we love the most, we would probably choose for the meaning Enjoy the Ride by The 502s. "There's no place I'd rather be, Than with my friends feeling free, In that van, living in the moment, Laughing praying none of this will change, But it always does, Please don't forget to live in the moment, Enjoy the ride, while you can"

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

One of the best gigs we have been to all together was Hans Zimmer in 3Arena, so we’d probably pick Time by Hans Zimmer.

Where can people find your music/more information?
