Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark is the latest Hollywood release to be delayed.

The movie, set decades before the acclaimed TV series, has been pushed back from March to September 24, studio Warner Bros said.

It was originally set to arrive in September last year before the pandemic intervened.

Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late Sopranos star James Gandolfini, will portray a younger version of his father's famous character, Tony Soprano, in the film.

The cast will also include Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, and John Magaro.

David Chase, the creator of the acclaimed HBO series, has teamed up with Lawrence Konner, one of the series' writers, for the script.

The film is said to be set during the race riots in Newark, New Jersey in 1967, during which 26 people died and more than 700 people were injured when members of the African-American and Italian communities clashed with local police.

It will be directed by Game of Thrones' Alan Taylor, who previously directed nine episodes of The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007. He also directed episodes of seasons one, two and seven of Game of Thrones.

His other credits include the films Terminator: Genisys and Thor: The Dark World, and the series Boardwalk Empire, Nurse Jackie, Mad Men and The West Wing.
