LA-based Dubliner Hannah Crowley recently released her new song Teeth in the Water and is gearing up for the release of her debut EP. We ask her the BIG questions...
Tell us three things about yourself?
I've studied three different genres of music; Classical, Jazz and Contemporary music at various stages of my life. It really gave me a great insight and understanding of how many different ways one can create and perform in these many art forms.
I also act and was involved in the Irish television series and movie Damo & Ivor. That was a really fun and exciting part of my life. It gave me an incredible introduction to the world of screen acting, which I enjoy immensely.
Lastly, it took me many years and a few attempts along the way to find my sound as an artist. Although this year has been very tough, the lockdown allowed me to go back to my roots and music influences to find what music excites me. Many new exciting artists have been emerging this year and their method of combining various genres has heavily influenced my sound. Sure, it only took a lockdown to figure out!
How would you describe your music?
A mixture of Indie Pop/Rock with a lot of late 90s, early 2000s music influences. Basically, the music I grew up with. Think The Cranberries and Phoebe Bridgers had a baby.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Radiohead, The Cranberries, The 1975 and Rina Sawayama.
How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?
I started writing a lot of songs with my roommates, who are fantastic musicians: Floyd Fuji, Elliott Marchent and Johannes Burger. I did a lot of great acting workshops, including The Lucid Method. I also watched every Star Wars, Lord of the Rings movie and every single episode of The Only Way Is Essex.
What's your favourite song right now?
Only Time Makes It Human by King Princess. She's absolutely killing it at the moment and works a lot with one of my favourite producers, Mark Ronson. She's a prime example of combining many musical elements from different decades to create something completely modern.
Favourite lyric of all time?
'They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while' - When You Were Young - The Killers
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Paranoid Android by Radiohead. I have recently taken a deep dive into Radiohead the last few years and I'm so astounded by how each of their albums sounds so different and fresh. I've probably listened to Paranoid Android hundreds of times and I'm constantly hearing new musical elements every time.
Where can people find your music/more information?
You can find my music on all streaming platforms. I am also releasing my debut EP in the middle of the year, so keep a look-out.
