Irish actress Simone Kirby is "thrilled" with the announcement of the third season of His Dark Materials giving her another chance to play the wonderful character of Mary Malone.

The Peaky Blinders star plays physicist and former nun Dr. Mary Malone, who has built a computer that can communicate with dark matter, in the show.

The Clare born actress posted on social media saying: "And a whole new world awaits. Thrilled to be continuing Mary’s journey. Congrats to all the Bad Wolf TV gang."

His Dark Materials will return to the BBC and HBO with Ruth Wilson reprising her role as Mrs Coulter.

Season three is based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of novels and follows the outline of The Amber Spyglass, season two was based on the second book in the trilogy series, The Subtle Knife, while the first season was based on Pullman's Northern Lights.

Filming on the new episodes will begin in Cardiff next year with Dafne Keene returning as Lyra, while Amir Wilson will be back as Will, Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala, Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi and James McAvoy as Lord Asriel.

Commissioning Editor for BBC drama in Wales, Ben Irving, said: "It’s been a joy to see how His Dark Materials has brought British TV audiences of all ages together on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

"Fans of Philip Pullman’s incredible books, and newcomers alike, have been enthralled by adventuring with Lyra and Will through multiple worlds.

"We are thrilled that they will be able to continue their journey in a third series of this beautifully realised drama.

The second series of His Dark Materials launched in the UK with almost six million viewers on BBC One.
