Fair City star teases tough Christmas for Orla

Fair City star Sorcha Furlong has said her character Orla is in for a tough Christmas – and decides she doesn't want to celebrate it at all.

With Wayne, played by Victor Burke, away, Orla’s hands are full looking after their child, running both businesses, and coping with everything else that is going on in the world and she is missing her partner "like mad."

"She thinks Wayne is going to come home sooner but he doesn’t and she’s definitely, she’s going to struggle for the next few months anyway," Furlong said.

Her co-star Burke added that he feels their storyline reflects what a lot of people are going through this year.

"I think the great thing about the show is it does reflect reality, I know so many people stuck away, can’t visit their family, it reflects society and what is happening in the world,’ he said. "I think Wayne and Orla are stuck in the same situation."

Orla is taken aback by a food delivery at Christmas

For Furlong and Burke, who is living in California and working remotely due to Covid-19, this has been a year of reflection and realising "what really matters."

"It definitely made me realise that the things you actually have around you, make you happy," Furlong said.

"You weren’t going into town on a Saturday night, you weren’t spending stupid money on stupid things... We were just at home and all trying to keep safe and protect each other."

She continued, "I decided to focus on what I had, because I heard of so many people who had lost. The community spirit was amazing, that’s what I found.

"Everybody was trying to lift each other’s spirits and that was an amazing thing."
