Ferrell who plays Buddy and Deschanel who plays Jovie came together via the magic of the internet to spread some festive cheer, and to raise money for the Democratic Party of Georgia, which is trying to get its candidates into the US Senate in a runoff election on January 5.
Other cast members who attended were Ed Asher, Kyle Glass, Mary Steenburgen with other actors joining in for the fun such as Wanda Sykes, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong and Jenna Ushkowitz.
The 2003 Christmas comedy follows Buddy, a human who was adopted and raised by Santa's elves at the North Pole, who decides to travel to New York City to locate his real father.
The popular movie is often listed among the greatest Christmas movies ever, and also generated a Broadway musical, as well as a stop-motion animated special for US network NBC.
The 80-year-old actor said he and the cast were set to make another movie, but admits friction between the film's director and the leading man stopped the project from getting off the ground.
Speaking on US radio Caan said: ''We were gonna do it and I thought, 'Oh my god, I finally got a franchise movie, I could make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.' ''
''The director and Will didn't get along very well. So, Will wanted to do it, he didn't want the director, and he had it in his contract, it was one of those things.''
