Oscar winners Michael Douglas and Christoph Waltz are to star in Reagan & Gorbachev, a new miniseries telling the story of the US and Soviet Union leaders' historic Iceland summit in 1986.

With Douglas portraying US President Ronald Reagan and Waltz cast as Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, the series will be directed by James Foley, whose credits include the series House of Cards and Billions, and the films At Close Range and Glengarry Glen Ross.

The series is based on Ken Adelman's book Reagan at Reykjavik: Forty-Eight Hours That Ended the Cold War. Adelman was Director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency under President Reagan.

Michael Douglas will star in the series and executive produce

News of the series was first reported by US entertainment industry website Deadline.

"Planned as a short, inconsequential gathering to outline future talks, the meeting quickly turned to major international issues, including the Strategic Defense Initiative and the possibility of eliminating all nuclear weapons," it said of the Reykjavik summit.

"Those negotiations laid the groundwork for the most sweeping arms accord in history the following year. It was a weekend that changed the world, and the series provides an honest and up-close portrait of Reagan at one of his finest and most challenging moments, per its makers."

Actors Douglas and Waltz and director Foley will be among the executive producers on the project from Paramount Television Studios.

Co-star Christoph Waltz will also executive produce

A biopic of Ronald Reagan, with Dennis Quaid in the lead role, is currently filming in the US.
