The New York Times has listed Daniel Day-Lewis and Saoirse Ronan in the top ten of the greatest actors of this century.
The US publication has released its list of the best actors from the 21st century with Ronan ranked at number 10. Day-Lewis was named the third-best actor from this century so far.
It's no surprise that Day-Lewis ranked so highly. He is the only person to ever win three Best Actor Oscars beginning with his astonishing portrayal of Christy Brown in Jim Sheridan's My Left Foot in 1989.
He won again twice more, for his role as the ruthless oil prospector in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood (2008) and for his eponymous role in Lincoln (2013).
Since making his screen debut as a teenager in Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971, through to modern classics such as My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and Scorcese's Gangs of New York (2002), he has been an actor without peer largely due to the intense preparations he puts into each role.
He's probably the most famous 'method actor' of modern times and is famed for the extreme lengths he goes to prepare for each part, whether it's confining himself to a wheelchair during production, learning to build a canoe or even allowing himself to succumb to pneumonia for the sake of his art.
Ronan, who made her acting debut on The Clinic in 2003, has also starred in a number of critically acclaimed movies including Brooklyn (2015), which is based on the novel with the same name written by Irish author Colm Tóibín.
In recent years she has worked on a number of projects with celebrated female director Greta Gerwig, including Little Women (2019) and Lady Bird (2017).
At the age of 26, she has garnered four Academy Award nominations and won a Golden Globe for her performance in Lady Bird.
Speaking about her growth as an actress, A. O. Scott of the New York Times wrote: "Ronan brings a quicksilver precision that is thrilling and a little unsettling to watch.
"This is because as much as she captures the emotional weather and specific body language of, say, a 16th-century Scottish queen or a 21st-century California teenager, what she conveys even more vividly is the way those people think, the way it feels to be inside their heads."
Denzel Washington was deemed the greatest actor of the century so far with Isabell Huppert claiming the number 2 spot. Keanu Reeves and Nicole Kidman were ranked 4 and 5 respectively. They were followed by Song Kang Ho, Toni Servillo, Zhao Tao and Viola Davis.
