Former US President Barack Obama has shared a playlist of 'Memorable Songs' from his Presidency ahead of the release of his new memoir - and it features U2's anthem Beautiful Day.

The 44th president's book, A Promised Land, which he has dedicated to his wife Michelle and their two daughters, Sasha and Malia, is in shops today and the well-known music fan has provided a virtual jukebox of tracks he enjoyed during his two terms in office.

It includes Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Beyoncé, Bob Dylan, Brooks & Dunn, Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Frank Sinatra, Gloria Estefan, Fleetwood Mac, JAY-Z, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Phillip Phillips, The Beatles, Sade, Stevie Wonder and U2.

"Music has always played an important role in my life - and that was especially true during my presidency," Obama, 59, said in a tweet accompanying the playlist.

"In honor of my book hitting shelves tomorrow, I put together this playlist featuring some memorable songs from my administration. Hope you enjoy it."

Obama frequently shares lists of his favourite songs, movies and books and shared his last playlist in August, featuring "a mix of genres that travels through various eras."
