Dublin four-piece Heroes in Hiding have released their new single, Sunday Best. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
Heroes in Hiding, made up of Liam McCabe, Joe Carroll, Oisin Jacob and Cian Donohoe, used the pandemic to take stock and begin creating new music that demonstrates an evolution in their songwriting.
The band's latest single, Sunday Best, which was released on October 30, was written, produced and recorded in isolation during Ireland’s first lockdown in early 2020. This process involved the four members emailing individual recordings of their instruments back and forth for weeks until they finally settled on an arrangement that best represented the essence of the song.
The track exists both in the band's bedrooms and in their emails. It is a song specific to the surreal situation that birthed it.
Tell us three things about yourself?
Three of the four members of the band have known each other since they were four years old.
Our new single was written and recorded remotely during lockdown. We have never played the song as a band because of the restrictions.
We play a 2v2 soccer game every year in the carpark of our studio to determine who is in charge of the band for the coming year. The game was played behind closed doors this year.
How would you describe your music?
Indie Rock with subtle electronic elements.

Who are your musical inspirations?
Frightened Rabbit, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire and Arctic Monkeys are just some of the bands that shaped our formative years and have influenced our sound. We are also heavily influenced by electronic music and hip hop, specifically in the way samples and soundscapes are used to create songs in these genres.
How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?
Apart from the obvious Zoom quizzes and movie marathons, we continued writing and recording as much as was mentally possible during lockdown. All in all, we just did our best to maintain a sense of normality in our lives in spite of what was going on. Our new single, Sunday Best deals with this line of thinking.
What's your favourite song right now?
Can I Believe You from Fleet Foxes glorious new album, Shore.
Favourite lyric of all time?
It has to be Wichita Lineman by Glen Cambell. It's beautiful, elegant and sincere. He says everything he needs to in two lines.
"And I need you more than want you,
And I want you for all time."
