Denise Welch has announced that she is returning to the world of soap and is joining the cast of Hollyoaks to play Nikki Sanderson's on-screen mother.

The Loose Women star - known for her roles as Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street and Steph Haydock in BBC drama Waterloo Road - revealed the news on ITV's Loose Women and said she will play dance teacher Trish.

She said: "I am thrilled to be joining the cast of Hollyoaks in this, their 25th year.

"I'm looking forward to working with some old friends and making new ones. The character of Trish Minniver is an actor's dream and I can't wait to introduce her to you."

The 62-year-old's other acting roles include the television dramas Spender (1991–1993), Soldier, Soldier (1993–1995) and Down to Earth (2004–2005).

In 2011, she was a contestant on the sixth season of Dancing on Ice, where she was partnered with professional skater Matt Evers, and in 2012, she won the ninth season of Celebrity Big Brother.
