Dublin trio N.O.A.H. have announced the release of their debut single Shine. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

The band, lead vocalist and guitarist Ryan Hill, bassist Adam Rooney, and drummer Ronan Hynes, say the new song tells the tale of a journey, one which we must all have to make at one point or another in our lifetime.

Over the past seven months, the band have been locked away writing, rehearsing and recording new music and as a result, their most recent songs are heavily informed by the ongoing pandemic, with themes such as isolation, escapism, and togetherness.

Tell us three things about yourself?

All three band members were born on a Thursday.

We have been playing music together since we were 13.

We all have matching tattoos.

How would you describe your music?

We would say that our music is predominantly modern indie rock, with an influence from pop and electronic music. The rhythm section has always been important to our sound. Our songs are typically bass, and drum driven and are accompanied by guitars and synths that give it an overall atmospheric feel.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Strangely enough we all grew up idolising pretty much the same bands, Kings of Leon, U2, and The Killers. In the beginning, these acts really helped us to develop our own sound and ultimately brought us together as a band.

Nowadays we take inspiration from all sorts of artists and genres, from heavier rock bands like Idles to more chill dance artists like Dáithí. We feel that there is something valuable in having an open ear, inspiration could come from anywhere.

How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?

The past seven months has largely been consumed in developing and growing the band. We spent months writing, recording and rehearing new material. We all really pushed ourselves as song writers to produce music that is authentic, and representative of where we are in our lives.

Life outside of music mostly consisted of watching Netflix, and long walks around our local village. Afterlife and Tiger King were some of our favourite binge watches.

What's your favourite song right now?

Ronan: Dual Citizenship by Denise Chaila.

Ryan: Space by Biffy Clyro.

Adam: Fire in Bone by The Killers.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Ryan: The Phonebook by Editors. The lyrics are about how we have to be strong for people when they need us and I like how the singer metaphorically delivers that in the lyrics, "Sing me a love song, From your heart or from the phonebook, It don't matter to me, I'm an apple, you're the tree, I won't fall when you're shook"

Adam: Atlantic City by Bruce Springsteen. The lyrics are beautifully nihilistic, they enforce the idea of living in the moment, "Well now everything dies baby that's a fact, But maybe everything that dies someday comes back, Put your make-up on, fix your hair up pretty, And meet me tonight in Atlantic City"

Ronan: Song For Someone by U2. I like these lyrics because it’s pretty much what it says on the tin, "If there is a light, You can't always see, And there is a world, We can't always be, If there is a dark, Now we shouldn't doubt, And there is a light, Don’t let it go out"

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?

Ryan: Whippoorwill - Clock Opera

Ronan: Wake Up - Arcade Fire

Adam: Late Night - Foals
