Grammy-winner Helen Reddy, the Australian singer behind global feminist anthem I Am Woman, has died aged 78.

Her family confirmed the news in a statement posted to Facebook. Her children Traci Donat and Jordan Sommers described her as a "wonderful mother, grandmother, and a truly formidable woman".

"Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever."

Born in Melbourne in 1941, Reddy began her showbiz career at an early age, performing regularly on the stage and small screen.

In the early 60s, she moved to New York where she eventually signed with Capitol Records. She had a string of pop-rock hits in the 70s and is best known on this side of the Atlantic for Angie Baby, a top five hit both here in Ireland and the UK.

On the other side of the Atlantic she became a much bigger star, thanks largely to the success of the 1972 feminist anthem I Am Woman, which was a massive hit in the USA, Canada and Australia.

Millions of copies of the track sold around the world making Reddy the biggest-selling female artist for two years running. It also became a prominent part of the global women's liberation movement.

While collecting the Best Female Vocalist Grammy in 1973, Reddy famously thanked "God because she makes everything possible".

Reddy became a naturalised American citizen in 1974 and followed-up I Am Woman with a string of US hits, such as Delta Dawn, the aforementioned Angie Baby and Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady. She also hosted her own TV variety show The Helen Reddy Show, on top of starring Hollywood movies.

Her career tapered in the 1980s and she officially retired in 2002.

Reddy, who suffered from Addison's disease, was diagnosed with dementia in 2015 and had been living in a care home in Los Angeles at the time of her death.
