Pick of the Day

Mary Berry’s Simple Comforts, 8.00pm, BBC Two

Mary visits Ireland, where humble comfort food is at the heart of the local cuisine - as Mary discovers at Cork’s local food market, which is jam-packed with culinary delights, from fresh fish and steaming stews to beautiful breads and the famous Boxty potato pancake.

Cork was once the centre of the world’s butter exchange, so Mary sets off in a sidecar to explore Cork’s famous butter roads. She stops along the way to sample some butter before going in search of a traditional Irish cake that is said to tell your fortune.

Mary’s Irish adventure is interspersed with making simple, warming recipes, including a salmon and fennel one-pot wonder, a lamb and haricot bean casserole, slow-roast pork with the perfect crackling and a side of Colcannon, and a coffee and praline cake perfect for any family celebration.

For years, the Irish Revolution has been seen as exceptional in that acts of sexual violence weren't seen as part of it, even though they happen as part of many other wars.

But was Ireland really so special? Was the nature of war here so very different from war everywhere else?

This documentary argues that the answer is no, by presenting for the first time the witness testimony of some of the women who were victims of it, in their own words.

It shows that sexual violence was perpetrated by all sides and highlights the repeated silencing of women and their stories in Irish history.
