James Caan has said that sequel to the much-loved movie classic Elf won't happen because of tension between star Will Ferrell and director Jon Favreau.

The 80-year-old actor, who played the father of Ferrell's character Buddy Hobbs in the festive flick said he and the cast were set to make another movie, but admits friction between the film's director and leading man stopped the project from getting off the ground.

During an appearance on Cleveland's 92.3 The Fan's Bull & Fox, Caan said: ''We were gonna do it and I thought, 'Oh my god, I finally got a franchise movie, I could make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.' ''

''The director and Will didn't get along very well. So, Will wanted to do it, he didn't want the director, and he had it in his contract, it was one of those things.''

The 2003 Christmas comedy, which also starred Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Daniel Tay, Bob Newhart and Ed Asner, follows Buddy, a human who was adopted and raised by Santa's elves at the North Pole, who decides to travel to New York City to locate his real father.

The popular movie is often listed among the greatest Christmas movies ever, and also generated a Broadway musical, as well as a stop-motion animated special for US network NBC.
