Paul Mescal is in with the chance of adding "Emmy winner" to his CV this weekend, but we've loved him long before he got the nod - here are just eight of the reasons why.

1. His range as an actor

Normal People made Mescal a global star, and rightly so with such a powerful performance, but he has been knocking out great performances on stage for a long time. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him in shows a few times over the years and thinking, 'wow, he’s something special.’ And he is. Then there’s the Rolling Stones video he stars in - which is just brilliant. And lest we forget the Bali-haughnis ad!

2. He can sing, too

He has talent coming out his ears, and his signing voice brings literal music to mine. To be able to hold his own on stage with Dermot Kennedy says it all really.

3. He’s a supportive big brother

Talent runs in the family and he is his sister Nell Mescal’s biggest fan. He is always sharing posts of her singing and bigging her up, and it’s just lovely. It seems even nicer now that he’s doing it after his own social media following has grown so much, he hasn’t changed who he is just because more people know who he is.

4. And a supportive friend

Whenever he gets a bit of praise for playing Connell, he is always very quick to shine a light on his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones who played Marianne. From shout-outs on social media, to comments in interviews, he makes sure it never becomes all about him.

5. "I’m Irish"

A simple and effective tweet sent by Mescal after receiving his Emmy nomination for his performance in Normal People, leaving no one under any illusion as to where he is from. As is a common occurrence when an Irish person does well at something, Mescal was claimed as being British by a number of UK publications after the news of his nomination broke, and he wasn’t here for it.

6. He’s vocal on issues that matter to him

From showing his support for Black Lives Matter, to raising money for mental health charity Pieta House, Mescal is proactive in using his platform to highlight the issues that matter to him, and that’s just great.

7. He’s someone to root for

It has been a weird few months, but Mescal’s success story has been a glimmer of something positive to root for while everything else has been a bit gloomier than usual. It’s great to see someone do well, someone be appreciated for their talent, to see the good guy go far, and to get the sense that they’ve remained humble and who they are, through it all.

8. His style

Who new GAA shorts could look so good, outside of Ireland? Or that a simple chain could drive people wild? His day-to-day style is simple jumpers, jeans, and t-shirts. Classic and timeless. But when he’s doing photoshoots and editorial, he can pull off the more ‘fashion’ looks like a pro.
