Singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle dies aged 38

The death has been announced of Justin Townes Earle, the award-winning American singer-songwriter and son of Grammy winner Steve Earle, at the age of 38.

Justin Townes Earle's passing was announced in a statement on his official Instagram account.

"It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin," it read.

"So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys. You will be missed dearly Justin."

No cause of death was given.

Justin Townes Earle followed in his father's footsteps with the release of his first EP Yuma in 2007 and debut album The Good Life in 2008.

His most recent album, The Saint of Lost Causes, was released last year. Justin Townes Earle performed with his father on many occasions over the years, including guesting on Steve Earle's 2009 Grammy-winning tribute album to the late singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, Townes.

Justin Townes Earle is survived by his wife Jenn Marie, their three-year-old daughter Etta St James, his mother Carol-Ann Hunter, his father, and extended family.
