The Red Hot Chili Peppers has announced the death of guitarist Jack Sherman, who played on their first and second album and contributed to many others.

Mr. Sherman was 64 and it is not known how he died. 

In a tweet the band said: "We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed,

"Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA. He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between. Peace on the boogie platform."

The band played at Slane Castle in 2003 to a crowd of 80,000.
