Selling Sunset star Mary Fitzgerald has revealed she nearly died in a car crash after falling asleep behind the wheel.

Speaking on 2FM Breakfast with Doireann & Eoghan, the estate agent and reality star told presenter Eoghan McDermott that the accident happened because she was utterly exhausted from working full-time, looking after her son full-time and going to college.

"When I was in college I was taking care of my son full-time and I was just so exhausted. I was also working full-time. I was a single mother and going to college too and I fell asleep at the wheel. I've got scars all over me. I was driving on the freeway and I flipped my car. I got thrown out and landed, rolling on the freeway.

"I've got marks all over me. You can't really see them on the show. I broke a bunch of different ribs, lacerated my spleen and my liver. I was in a short-term coma. I'm fine. I made it."

Fitzgerald also said that there is more drama happening behind-the-scenes of the hit Netflix show now that they are all doing media interviews to promote the series.

She said: "Things are probably worse behind-the-scenes than they are on it, because of all the press and what we say and the other girl hears it."

But is all the drama real?

"We are just living our real lives; what we do and say is what we do and say. They edit it down... so what you guys are seeing is the most entertaining, dramatic part.

"Where production comes in is when they ask us to talk about stuff or if one of the girls says something... and they would say whenever you see her you should talk about that. So they are not putting words in our mouth, but if something happens they encourage us to talk about it and we have to share our lives, even if it is painful."

And what about those eye-watering commissions - do they really receive upwards of $100,000 when they sell a house?

"I get in arguments with Jason (owner of estate agency The Oppenheim Group) every single time (about the agent-broker commission split). I do the math and in my head, I know. But the minute I write the cheque I still see what it should have been.

"I did all the work; it's my client and I see the final amount and then I'm like, 'Jason, we need to talk about this'. He's like, 'Mary, stop. We've done this for how many years now?' and I get very frustrated.

"But it is worth it. I wouldn't be in this position if it wasn't for him."
