RTÉ has confirmed that Fair City is back in production and will make its TV return on Sunday, September 6 at 8pm.

Executive producer Brigie de Courcy has delighted soap fans with news that the cast and crew of the long-running show have returned to Carrigstown.

The last recorded episode of Fair City aired on April 12 after the Covid-19 pandemic prohibited further filming of the show.

Explaining that health and safety have been a priority amid the coronavirus outbreak, she said, "everyone is delighted to get back to telling stories.

"It has been our priority that these systems were in place before committing to a return date so that we could protect the health and well-being of our actors, writers, directors and crew.

"We have been eager to get back to production, but the priority was the health and safety of the whole team. Everyone is delighted that we are now in a position to get back to telling stories and bringing fun and chaos back to Carrigstown."

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, de Courcy explained how all of the script plans up to Christmas and the New Year, which included "a wonderful love affair", a murder whodunnit and a court case had to be put on hold as they couldn't be staged safely and they had to start again to incorporate the pandemic into the script of the long running soap.

She said they have had to become inventive to keep the programme couples apart by using bicycles or ladders to ensure the 2 metre social  distancing.

Teasing an upcoming storyline, she said one of the plots will involve a young couple who just got together when the lockdown happened and have spent the last six months "cooped in a tiny flat driving each other bonkers while falling in love".

"Oh, we’re doing something that is going to be lovely. Sean, who is played by Ryan Andrews, meets the woman of his dreams while doing online dance classes," she said.

"We’re actually bringing together Karen Byrne, who was in Dancing With The Stars, and Ryan, to do some remote dancing on the streets, which is going to be very lovely."
