Normal People has been nominated for four Emmy Awards. Irish actors Andrew Scott and Fiona Shaw have also received nominations for Black Mirror and Killing Eve respectively.

Paul Mescal has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series, Lenny Abrahamson for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Sally Rooney and Alice Birch for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series and Louise Kiely for Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series.

Mescal is shortlisted alongside Jeremy Irons, Watchmen; Hugh Jackman, Bad Education; Jeremy Pope, Hollywood; Mark Ruffalo, I Know This Much Is True.

The Kildare actor said he is "utterly honoured" to be nominated alongside "such immense actors I have admired from afar."

"Normal People was created by a huge cast and crew who deserve so much recognition for their incredible work," Mescal said.

"Most importantly I want to thank my amazing friend and brilliant co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones as the show would not have got the extraordinary response without her electric performance."

Mescal was tipped to earn a nomination after his compelling performance as Connell in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel, which captured audiences around the world. The series aired on RTÉ One, the BBC and streaming service Hulu.

Executive producers of Normal People and co-founders of Element Pictures, Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney said, "Congratulations from all of us at Element to Paul, Lenny, Sally, Alice and Louise for their Emmy nominations.

"The response to the show internationally has exceeded our wildest dreams and this is an incredible honour for the show and for everyone who worked on it."

There was more luck for the Irish. Andrew Scott's performance in Black Mirror earned him a place on the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series shortlist, while Fiona Shaw was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Drama, for her role on Killing Eve.

Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin, extended her congratulations to all of the nominees.

"I pass on my heartiest congratulations to the nominees and to all the team at Element Pictures," Minister Martin said.
